Bach in Thun

Since 1987, the “Bachwochen Thun” festival has been celebrating the artistic legacy of Johann Sebastian Bach, combining his works with that of other composers. And it’s nearly time again: at the end of August and the beginning of September, local musicians and international stars will perform live at various venues in the Thun area – a must-see not only for classical music enthusiasts. Here, we present four highlights.

Friday, 30th of August, Stadtkirche Thun

The concert “Die vier Ouvertüren” focuses on Johann Sebastian Bach’s orchestral suites. The works, which comprise different dance movements, offer diverse orchestral music and are masterfully performed by the La Cetra Baroque orchestra Basel under the direction of Andrea Marcon.

Saturday, 31st of August, Parkhotel Gunten

The Bachwochen are also committed to promoting young people. Vital Julian Frey presents the winners of the “Young Talent Award 2024”, who will receive coaching during the festival and step into the spotlight together with the artistic director.

Sunday, 1st of September, Kirche Amsoldingen

The Armenian national instrument Duduk is largely unknown in our region. Crafted from apricot wood, its sound resembles that of a clarinet. At the “Duduk meets Bach” concert, you will have the opportunity to experience Duduk virtuoso Arsen Petrosyan live.

Friday, 6th of September, Kirche Hilterfingen

Bach’s sonatas for violin and harpsichord are among of his masterpieces. Swiss violinist Esther Hoppe is accompanied by Vital Julian Frey on the harpsichord and will breathe new life into two of these sonatas at the “Bach bis Bartók” concert, combined with works by Tartini, Bartók and Prokofiew.
