Nature in every moment – Art by Christoph Flück

Nature in all its forms – its elements, colours, and the changing seasons – has always been a defining influence on the work of this painter from the Bernese Oberland with Norwegian roots. The North Sea, in particular, serves as a source of inspiration for the interplay between sky and water; he seeks to capture their energy and «underlying essence», which can be felt in his oil paintings and watercolors.

Viewers easily notice the strong connection to nature – and particularly to the element of water – in his paintings, which range from more to less abstract. Shades of blue, such as ultramarine, dominate the numerous oil paintings stacked against the walls of his studio in Spiez. It is likely no coincidence that the house where he lives with his family – and into which his studio is integrated – is located near Lake Thun. «There’s never enough space», Christoph Flück replies with a smile when asked if his studio is big enough for him. But he has his family with him, which also has its advantages. The canvases of the former architectural draughtsman – ranging from small to large – partially featuring expressive shades of red and yellow that evoke summer or autumn and sometimes human figures, but only if they express qualities such as joy and energy and become natural phenomena in his paintings themselves.

Instead of a brush, Christoph Flück uses a spatula for his oil paintings. While working, he plays loud music from various genres. This likely helps him capture the primal and dynamic essence of nature on the canvas. The powerful strokes of the spatula, created during this process and sometimes resembling windstorms and crashing waves, are clearly visible in the paintings. Yet his paintings radiate a surprising ease: «I’m usually a pretty calm person», he notes in a measured voice. He used to paint directly outdoors in nature; today, he processes his impressions and feelings later in his studio. Active as a freelance artist since 1989, his body of work encompasses not only painting in oil, watercolour, and acrylic but also land art and interventions.
