The Sigma 7 mission in 1962 with astronaut Walter Schirra marked a milestone in watch history: it was the first time an OMEGA Speedmaster had been in space. During the nine-hour flight, during which Schirra orbited the earth six times, the foundation stone was laid for the Speedmaster's later significance in space travel.
The successful mission was followed by official certification by NASA, which approved the watch for all future manned space missions, thus cementing OMEGA's outstanding position in the history of space travel.
